The negative effects of stress on your health are many and well documented, but what actually is stress? It is a natural and normal defense process that prepares us for dealing with a potential threat to our well being. The brain sends out the message, the adrenal glands send out the hormones, the heart rate increases, muscles tense, more blood flows to the extremities and we are ready for 'fight or flight'. In the fast paced modern world in which we now find ourselves, there are many situations where we unconsciously bring about this response process when it is entirely unnecessary. This may be due to subconscious thoughts, feelings and beliefs that arise, which then trigger this physiological 'fight or flight' response. We may then remain living day to day in this state which over time can lead to anxiety and depression.
